Why convert images to WebP?
WebP can reduce image transfer size while preserving useful visual quality. Smaller images can improve loading performance when they are correctly sized for their rendered placement.
How to choose quality and dimensions
- Start around 80–85 quality for photographs and compare the result visually.
- Resize images to the largest size the layout actually renders.
- Keep transparent PNG artwork transparent by checking the converted preview.
- Do not upscale a small source image; it adds pixels without adding detail.
- Retain the original file as a recoverable source asset.
Optimization beyond file format
Modern format alone does not guarantee fast performance. Set explicit width and height, use responsive image candidates, lazy-load below-the-fold media, and give the true above-the-fold image appropriate priority.
